The term demonym refers to the residents of a place, and it was first used by Paul Dickson in his book What Do You Call a Person From…? A Dictionary of Resident Names (). According to Dickson, demonym is based on the Greek word demos ‘the people’ and nym ‘name’, and roughly means ‘the name commonly given to the residents of a place’, such as ‘Briton, Midwesterner, Liverpudlian, Arkansawyer, and Parisienne’.
