The term demonym refers to the residents of a place, and it was first used by Paul Dickson in his book What Do You Call a Person From…? A Dictionary of Resident Names (). According to Dickson, demonym is based on the Greek word demos ‘the people’ and nym ‘name’, and roughly means ‘the name commonly given to the residents of a place’, such as ‘Briton, Midwesterner, Liverpudlian, Arkansawyer, and Parisienne’.
