Alabama unpledged electors
In Alabama, instead of voters selecting the party or candidate they wanted, they instead chose the electors themselves. Unlike most states where the electors pledged to vote for the nominee for their party, six of the eleven Democrat electors remained unpledged and ultimately voted for another candidate instead, Harry F. Byrd.(RealClear, Trende) (Dave Leip’s Atlas)
Hawaii dual slates
Initially, Kennedy had an unofficial lead of 92 votes in Hawaii, but errors in the tabulation sheets reversed his lead and gave Nixon a 141 lead. This lead to the electoral votes being initially certified for Nixon, which would have meant he won the state.(Politico, Cheney) Because of this, a recount was filed on behalf of the Democratic Party in Hawaii by Robert G. Dodge. The recount was cautiously issued by Judge Jamieson, in which they ordered that 34 precincts be recounted. Due to the recount, Nixon’s lead dwindled to 61, which, after the recount showed a trend toward Kennedy, Judge Jamieson ordered even more precincts to be recounts than initially intended. This lead to Kennedy beating Nixon with a 115 lead.(Tuttle, p. 337) This would cause the Governor of Hawaii to certify another slate of electors on January 6th, 1961, (notably the same day as the finalization of the Electoral College vote), but this time for Kennedy.(GovInfo) (Tuttle, p. 337)

The VICE PRESIDENT (after consideration of the aforementioned documents by the tellers) .
