Brainstorming

The views and ideas expressed in this note may not be reflective of my current beliefs.

When dealing with opinions that are abhorrent or extremely offensive, instead of using language such as ‘disgusting’ or ‘you’re a piece of shit,’ use less intense language such as ‘lame,’ or ‘that’s cringe,’ or ‘bro’s lost.’ This is because people tend to use extreme language used against them to show how ‘ridiculous’ their reactions are to ‘just their opinion.’ These edited reactions make moderates think that ‘both sides’ are equally bad and good, giving a false equivalence.

Responding with statistics or studies for unusual opinions from the norm that you can explain beyond the abstract can also be very helpful.

When the opposition is acting in bad faith or is unwilling to engage properly, then and only then and you use similar rhetoric as them. Until then, do not act rude or patronizing to your opposition.

Core divide

Remember, the primary reason most people voted for Donald Trump was because of the belief that both sides are equally bad and that institutions have been either failing or inadequately solving problems with society for the past twenty years.
If you can at least prove that both sides are in fact simply not equally bad and that the left tends to be better without explicitly saying such, then you may succeed in convincing your opposition.

Don't do

Do not try to convince your opposition that their side or beliefs are based on a fundamental evil or immoral system or structure because that will make them antagonistic and defensive to any position or argument you use, yielding no affect. Such rhetoric only serves to grow your own ego and not only decrease your chances of changing your oppositions mind, but may make your opposition hold on to their positions more strongly.
