Proportional representation (PR) attempts to represent each groups interest within a district by electing multiple people depending on their share of the total votes, doing so proportionally, guaranteeing certain parties and voices are represented officially.(ACE, Bristow-Johnson, 2010)

PR requires that districts each are made up of more than one member, since it is obviously not possible to divide one seat.(ACE, Bristow-Johnson, 2010)

PR grants seats by party, not by individual candidate, meaning voters vote on a specific party instead, and the parties get the amount of seats according to the percentage of the vote they got in the election.

Here’s how it may look in a State like Massachusetts:
Before:

(Protect Democracy)

After:

(Protect Democracy)

One form of PR is STV.
