Since at least May 2022, a disinformation campaign setup by Russia has been publishing fake articles from false web domains, Doppelganger.(Alaphilippe et al., 2022)
DoJ 32 websites
On September 4, 2024, a report was released showing that Doppelganger created 32 fake websites of mainstream news outlets, primarily American news outlets such as Fox News and the Washington Post, using domains names similar to their URLs.(DoJ p. 1) Many of the stories faked by Russia were to help their image in the Russo–Ukrainian war,(DoJ p. 19) along with benefitting the Republican Party over the Democratic Party.(DoJ p. 228)
