There are two possible ways to fix Gerrymandering:

Changing how political districts can be drawn

Adding new restrictions to how political districts are drawn would be an amazing start:

  • States should create independent commissions with an equal representation of all political parties within the State’s legislature to decide political district boundaries.
  • No enclaves or exclaves.
  • No extremely long narrow stripes.

Elections for gerrymandering

Election systems

Changing the voting system to a MMP or STV voting system would allow districts to not have to perfectly represent a single coherent group of people with only one Representative and allow more legislatures to represent diverse people within a single district. Even if gerrymandering were to occur, the districts affected would still get to have another Representative represent the minority group(s) within the district.
